Whiskey Complex Daily Update

August 15, 2013

Special Information:

Please be advised that access to the Umpqua National Forest from the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest via Forest Road 6620 (Abbott Prairie) is closed at the Forest boundary.

Public tours of the Incident Command Post, located at Milo Adventist Academy will be held Saturday, August 17 at 10 am and 2 pm.  Wear sturdy shoes due to the uneven terrain.  Tours will last 45 minutes to an hour.  Leave pets at home please.

General Information:

The warming and drying trend since the beginning of the week has allowed fire fighters to begin burnout operations.  The eastern edge of the Whiskey Fire, along Forest Service Road 2526 to the 800 spur, will continue to be slowly ignited by hand to establish a secure containment line.  One challenge is the fuels are still green at higher elevations and will not readily burn.  A group of engines will work a swing shift today to extend the burning window for this section of the fire.  The road group has completed their preparation along the southeastern corner and has started removing equipment.  Excess equipment will be cleared; crews will remove any slash then start burning as conditions become favorable.  A handheld infrared heat detector was utilized along the northwestern and west side of the fire, detecting several previously hidden heat sources.  The system will be used again today and on other parts of the fire.

The Buckeye Fire is 100% contained and in monitor status.  Final rehab actions along Forest Road 28 (South Umpqua River Highway), include chipping debris and hazard reduction, in anticipation of reopening the road.

Air resources were busy yesterday and anticipate a full slate of missions today.  An inversion should lift around 2 pm, but smoke can still cause visibility problems.

Smith Ridge Fire is 100% contained and in patrol status.

Buckeye Fire is 100% contained and also in patrol status.

Whiskey Fire is now 55% contained and had a little growth inside the east and southeast perimeter.

For fire firefighter and public safety, the large area closure around the Whiskey Fire remains in effect; major roads in the area are closed.  Please see the inciweb or Whiskey Complex blog for full information.
