A Community Meeting will be held this evening, Friday, August 2, at 7:00 p.m. in the Tiller Elementary School, 27450 Tiller Trail Highway Tiller, Oregon. Members of the Incident Management Team will discuss the fire situation. Local residents are encouraged to attend. The Team will also provide a current fire status update to the elders of the Cow Creek Tribe in Canyonville today.

On Thursday, lower temperatures and higher humidity provided an opportunity to strengthen lines on the east side of the Buckeye Fire and parts of the Whiskey Fire. The spot fire on the south side of the Whiskey Fire was active in the late afternoon; a strategy to stop it at the 600 road is planned.

The Smith Ridge Fire is about 80% contained. While fire behavior has moderated somewhat as the marine layer covers the valley, increasing temperatures and decreasing humidity are predicted beginning Sunday. “We’re glad for a couple of cooler days,” said Operations Chief Shawn Sheldon, “and we’re working as hard as we can to get ahead of these fires. But with a warming and drying trend coming our way, we’ve got to be prepared for the possibility that these fires will want to get up and run.”

Effective today, August 2, an area closure will be implemented around the Whiskey and Big Brother fires. The road closures in effect for the Smith Ridge and Buckeye fires will still remain in effect. This action was taken to control the amount of traffic in the fire area, and for safety concerns dealing with falling snags.
